News for December 24, 2008

New books in the library this week are numerous: Black Ops by W E B Griffen, Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt, Blood Wedding by P J  Brooke, Burning Up on Tour With the Jonas Brothers by Kevin Jonas, Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron  Curtain by Peter Sis, P.D. James’ Private Patient and Jayne Ann Krentz’s Running Hot, Lost Temple by Tom Harper, Maze of Bones by Rick Riordon and Paula Deens My 1st Cookbook, Tales of Beedle the Bard by J. K. Rowling,  John Lennon the Life by Philip Norman, and Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson.  In the last few weeks, patrons and passer byes have donated new bestsellers.  This actions allows substantial savings at the library.  Patrons and friends are purchasing books for their enjoyment and then donating them to the library.  We save dollars and then are able to purchase other books of interest.  Thanks to numerous donators for your generosity.

The library will be closed on January 19th for the celebration of Martin Luther King  jr. Day.  A Baptist minister, he became a civil rights activist early in his career.  He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president.  King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech.  In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience.   By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War.

The library recently received a slide projector with a compact television donated to the library.  The television views each slide or transforms the picture to the wall or a screen.  This is a wonderful tool to quickly review all of your slides so that when it comes time to transfer them to a CD, you have the capability of quickly reviewing your slide photos.  So bring your slide carousel and let’s look at the photos that you might like to save for future generations to revel over.  It would be nice to save your favorites and put them all on a disk or a digital frame.

Arts Alliance received a profit of more than $420 for the silent auction which began at the library prior to the Dickens Festivities and ended on the Friday before Christmas, just in time to make a fine Christmas gift.  Frank Kirkey tells me that a new watercolor class begins in February.  If you are a beginner or think that you can’t draw a straight line, this is the class for you.  More information will follow.

Luann Elizabeth, the library clerk, has prepared a small display of books, audio and videos to aid those who are looking to make a resolution for the New Year.  Whether it’s dieting, exercising to tone your muscles or to lose weight, or maybe to stop smoking, these materials are readily available for your assistance.

“We have the Bill of Rights, what we need is a Bill of Responsibility”  - Bill Maher

The entire staffs of the Hawn Memorial Library wish you a very happy, blessed and peaceful New Year.
