  Welcome!  The Hawn Memorial library sits on lovely shady street in beautiful downtown Clayton, New York.  The Village of Clayton is located in the Town of Clayton in Northern New York near the Canadian Border, on the St. Lawrence River.  We are ninety miles north of Syracuse and a four hour drive northeast of Buffalo.

HAWN LIBRARY NEWS    For  week  of  July  16, 2008       

 The Friends of the Library are once again sponsoring the “Pasta on the Greens” dinner to benefit the Hawn library on Wed. July 23rd from 5 – 8 pm at the C-Way Rte 12 Clayton.  Cost is $7.50 adults; $3.50 for children.  Take outs will be available.  This year’s raffle item is a beautifully detailed watercolor print of the St. Lawrence River titled “Seaway Traveler” by Paul Taylor.  The print is currently on display at the library where raffle tickets are also available.   

          Our favorite storyteller Judy Keeler will be at the library on Wednesday at 1 p.m. on July 23, so mark your calendar so you can come to the library on the day that Judy will be in town.  

News for July 16, 2008

          The 28th Annual Book Sale has numerous changes this year.   The sale will take place from July 16th  through the 19th,  Wednesday evening until noon on Saturday.   So, the hours of the sale are Wednesday from 6 to 8, Thursday from 9 to 6, Friday from 9 to 2, and on Saturday from 9 to noon.  The location of the sale this year will take place at the old fire hall in the Municipal Building at the corner of Mary and John Streets. 

          Judy Keeler, “storyteller extraordinaire” will be at the library on July 23rd at 1 p.m. to tell tales and weave a yarn. Judy has come to the library for many years to assist us in storytelling, and the children come in droves and enjoy the fables. Young and old alike will enjoy a day with Judy.

          Sharon Briggs has organized a craft class for young people, fifth grades and older.  A class will be available on July 21 at 1 p.m. making your own terrarium, a miniature landscape with living plants in a variety of different styles from a dish terrarium to a soda bottle terrarium. A craft day is offered for Wednesday the 23rd, making tote bags is offered for July 28, and Safari Day will be on the 30th, all at 1 p.m. and all for young children.  An adult program from the Humanities for the Arts will have Bruce Austin speak on July 30 at 7 p.m.

          The Friends of the Library will be hosting a single fundraiser on the evening of July 23 at the C-Way Restaurant for the Pasta On The Greens.  Takeouts will start at 4:30 and dinners will begin at 5 p.m. and will continue until 8 p.m.   Adults tickets are $7.50 and children from 3 – 10 years of age will be $3.50.  Our sincere thanks to the Natali Family and our special thanks to Mary Denesha for this wonderful fundraiser that they are assisting with the Friends group.

          The 28th annual book sale begins today, Wednesday, at the Old Fire Hall, The  hours today are from 6-8 pm,  and the new Thursday’s hours are from 9 am to 6 p.m., Friday‘s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday’s hours are from 9 to noon.  Discover a new author, or find a precious reminder from your youth.  But stop by the book sale to see what sales we have to offer.

          The July art exhibit, the Art Attack, will be on display until the end of July.  Some of the featured artists this year are Dale Sears, Joan Senkowicz, Pat Brown, Rachel Cole, Nancy Bond and Janice Byington..  Techniques and styles vary with each print or original piece and all are beautiful to survey.

          In August, Trudy Gagnon will again offer a peak at her wonderful talents through her art in the 4th Annual Gagnon Moment.  Trudy’s pieces will feature original oils, pencil and hand painted gourds. 

          Sharon Briggs has organized a workshop for tote bags on July   28 at 1 pm for children in grades 6 through 12.. Also on the calendar is a Safari Day for young children on Wednesday, July 30.   On that same day, there will be an evening presentation for the Humanities For the Arts with guest speaker, Bruce Austin.   Frank Kirkey will be giving a one day workshop in Watercolors for young people grades 6 and up on July 30 at 1 pm..   July 30th will be a busy day at the library.  A wonderful program of the Underground Rail Road will be presented on August 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.   It will be a active summer, so mark your calendar, and remember to stop by and visit the library.

          This will be the second year for the Dickens Tea.  It was so popular last year, and already, the ticket sales have been very successful.  This year’s event will take place at the Opera House on August 12.   Most of the ladies in attendance will be in period attire.  Watch for these wonderful costumes to adorn the streets on that Tuesday, and consider purchasing your ticket for next year’s social. 

          Keep in mind the following dates and programs:  the craft day will be at the library on July 23 at 1 pm,  and a class on July 21 at 1 pm as scheduled for  making your own terrarium.  As you stroll through the village of Clayton , look for the posters with the colorful rainbows to remind you of the summer events at the library.

          A video and audio sale will be featured at the library during the first two weeks of August, with a paperback sale following up during the last two weeks of the month.
