News for August  19,  2010

Hawn Memorial Library welcomed 20 authors to its 2nd annual Meet the Authors event Thursday, August 12.  Covering genres as diverse as children’s literature and young adult sci-fi/ fantasy to the history, homes and nature of the 1000 Islands region and the ghosts who dwell around upstate New York, the authors entertained dozens of patrons who came to chat with the writers and peruse their stories. Thanks to Elizabeth O’Brian and Debbie Allen this event was wonderful and enjoyed by all. There was a delicious spread of food that was prepared by Jeff Garnsey. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to assist with this night. We hope to see you again next year.

Our artist of the month is (Margaret) Elaine Engel. Elaine has been coming to “The River” for the past seventeen years and living on a sailboat in Clayton, with her husband, Ted. A retired school teacher from Pennsylvania, she has been painting for about seven years, working mostly with oil. Elaine has studied with Sharon Bowar and Jean Adams from Pennsylvania and Carol Hill and Marge Grothier from New York. She is a member of the River Arts Alliance. She has sold paintings in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia and Ontario.

Tricia Bannister from the Alzheimer’s Association of Central New York hosted her first class on Alzheimer’s Disease in the library on July 29th. There were 6 people in attendance. It was a very informative class on this confusing disease. The second class, “Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease”, will be held on August 25th from 6-7 p.m. If you are interested in this topic, please come into the library on August 25th for the most current information on this disease.

The summer reading program finished with a bang on Tuesday, August 10th.  “Captain HurriCain’s Seaside Magic Show” was educational and entertaining for all ages. Melina Kilpatrick was out front doing face painting prior to and even after the show. We would like to thank her for volunteering her time and materials to make sure everyone got a beautiful temporary tattoo. We would also like to thank Nancy Van Deusen for volunteering her time to ensure that the summer reading program was a success this year. Without her, there would not have been a program this summer.

Maureen Bovier will start up the American Girl Series again in September. This year she plans on 2 programs. The American Girl Series will be on Kristen and will begin on September 25th. The other program is the Dear America Series and will begin on October 16th. The series will be on the “Journal of Augustus Pelletier” and is for children that have graduated from the American Girl Series to chapter books. Both programs will run one time per month and will continue through April. There are sign-up sheets in the library, so please pre-register for these classes.
