News for September  2,  2010

The fourth annual Hawn Library Victorian Tea was held on August 17th at the Clayton Opera House. Approximately 150 guests attended. Thanks to Carol Davis for once again being the chairperson for this event. Carol wishes to thank everyone who attended and particularly the hostesses who did a superb job with their tables. The hostesses were: Polly Baril, Jordon Bach, Jan Beattie, Terri Hof, June Denny, Carol Davis, Ruth Dolan, Caroline MacGregor, Mary Jane Fonte, Bonnie Johnston, Mary Lloyd, Debbie Oliver, Marge Parker, Dianne Rogers, Linda Rowe and Barbara Thiebeau. All of their hard work and creativity made this tea a huge success. A special thank you goes out to Linda and Tome Rowe for their wonderful presentation about the sending of messages through flowers during Victorian times and for their glimpse into the Civil War period. Monies raised from this event help the Friends of Hawn Library buy books for the library and support its many events and programs.

Our artist of the month for September is Linda Palmer. She is a member of the National League of American Pen Women in the Arts Category and a member of the Central New York Watercolor Society. Throughout the year, Linda continues to take art workshops to learn new techniques and interact with fellow artists. She paints at the Thousand Island Land Trust building on Friday mornings and with the Thousand Island Plein Air Painters every two weeks. Linda has received numerous awards for her watercolor paintings including 2nd place at the Clayton En Plein Air in 2009 and honorable mention at the “Along the River’s Edge” for 2010. She has a B.S. in Fine Arts Degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Maureen Bovier will start up the American Girl Series again in September. This year she plans on 2 programs. The American Girl Series will be on Kristen and will begin on September 25th. The other program is the Dear America Series and will begin on October 16th. The series will be on the “Journal of Augustus Pelletier” and is for children that have graduated from the American Girl Series to chapter books. Both programs will run one time per month and will continue through April. There are sign-up sheets in the library, so please pre-register for these classes.

As school starts up again, we will start a pre-school playtime. In the past this has been a story hour for our pre-school aged children. Our wonderful moms that come in have decided to make this more of a playtime with some stories included. This will be held on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. If you have children of pre-school age, please come join the group. This has always been a popular time in the library with great stories and some creative art projects involved. Both parents and children have a great time. Come join the fun.
