The village of Croghan is located in Lewis County on the Beaver River. It was first settled by French trappers and Royalists escaping the French Revolution. Croghan was named in 1841 in honor of General George Croghan who served in the Revolution
In early years, it was a wild, wooded land but now there are many small businesses and farms in the area. May descendants of the original settlers still reside there.
Croghan is a recreation area and many people from other areas rent town camps during the summer months. Many of these summer residents use the library services while here. There are many interesting stores to browse through, including EM Marilley's Dry Goods, Croghan Candy Kitchen, Good Old Wishy's Ice Cream and the Croghan Meat Market, famous for its Croghan Bologna.
