Archives Month 2007 is being celebrated the entire month of October and the public is invited to attend the events being sponsored throughout the state.
The Northern New York Library Network’s Documentary Heritage Program is proud to announce the following activities in Jefferson and Lewis counties:
- The Town of Champion Historian will sponsor "Carthage Fire of 1884" at the Town of Champion Office, 10 North Broad Street, West Carthage. This will be a display showing old photos of industries involved in the fire, maps showing the extent of the fire, copies of primary and secondary source information pertaining to the fire, and a guide to a walking tour that will show residents sites that had been affected by the fire. The walking tour will be with Champion Town Clerk Christina Vargulick. The display will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the entire month of October 2007. - The Jefferson County Historical Society, 228 Washington St., Watertown, will sponsor "Why Archives Matter." The answer is both fascinating and fun to learn. This exhibit will be held Tuesday - Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Saturday: 12:00-5:00 p.m., October 1 - November 25, 2007. For more information, contact Christine Lamendola at 315-782-3491.
- Jefferson Community College’s Melvil Dewey Library, Watertown, will showcase a display in the lobby outside of the library. The focus of the display will be to illustrate the materials and methods used to preserve archival materials, and the education needed to pursue a career in archival work. - The Town of Croghan Municipal Offices, 9882 St. Rt. 126, Beaver Falls, will sponsor the "Pictorial History of the Town of Croghan." During this open house there will be and overview of what a historian does and what can be found in the historian’s office. There will be an exhibit of pictures, along with a computer slide show. The event will be held from 1:00-6:00 p.m. on October 26, 2007, and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on October 27, 2007. For more information, contact Jack and Mary Sweeney at 315-346-6201.
