Web Services Librarian (Potsdam)

 


 

Web Services Librarian - SUNY Potsdam College Libraries seek an innovative, technically skilled, and service-oriented librarian to coordinate and manage the Libraries’ online presence. This is a tenure-track academic faculty position with primary responsibility for web services, with an anticipated start date between May 1 and July 1, 2010.
Required Qualifications -
* American Library Association -accredited Master’s degree.
* Comfort developing web sites in a Unix environment using major open source tools
* Familiarity with a variety of standards, including PHP, XML, XHTML, CSS, SQL, XSLT, or Javascript
Preferred Qualifications -
* Experience with web development and/or design in a library, college, or university setting;
* Understanding of information seeking behaviors in an academic research environment;
* Ability to manage projects effectively in teams and independently;
* Affinity for new technologies;
* Affinity and aptitude for acquiring new knowledge and skills;
* Ability to assess the cost-benefit of emerging technologies for the comprehensive college library environment;
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and comfort communicating with the many constituents of the campus community;
* Strong analytical and organizational skills;
* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a collegial and collaborative environment;
Job Requirements & Essential Functions of the Job - The College Libraries at SUNY Potsdam encompass two physical facilities, the Frederick W. Crumb Library, located in the center of the academic quad, serving the general library needs of the College, and the Julia E. Crane Library, located in the Crane School of Music complex, dedicated to music-centered collections and services. The College Libraries operate under a single Director of Libraries, and as an organization seek to foster a culture of innovation and evolution that respects traditional library values while prioritizing user-centered services. The College Libraries have a long tradition of team-based management, leading from the middle, and valuing individual contributions to collaborative success. SUNY Potsdam is committed to integrating information literacy into the curriculum, and successful partnerships between the College Libraries and the broader campus community have led to development of a long-term goal of creating a library-centered information and learning commons for the College.
In this environment, the Web Services Librarian will manage the College Libraries’ website, promote innovation and responsiveness in the Libraries’ web design, coordinate all decision- making regarding the site, and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with other campus technology staff. The Web Services Librarian will also have responsibility for staff-side maintenance of the Libraries’ online information resources, which currently include research databases on multiple platforms, products in the SerialsSolutions suite, LibGuides, QuestionPoint, and others. As a holistic member of the library staff working in a team environment, secondary responsibilities of the Web Services Librarian may include reference, instruction, archives, and/or collection development. Specific work assignments will depend upon the strengths and interests of a successful candidate and the evolving needs of the institution.
A proven interest in developing a range of skills that cross traditional technical/public service boundaries will help the successful candidate demonstrate the kind of commitment to user services valued by the College Libraries. The successful candidate will also be prepared to participate in the holistic work of academic libraries, with basic competency at the professional level in core academic library functions, as well as a commitment to professional growth and flexibility in adapting to the dynamic environment of the academic library and higher education. As a faculty member, the successful candidate will serve on library and campus committees and engage in scholarly activities, requiring the ability to meet the scholarship, service, and excellence criteria for tenure-track reappointment, promotion and tenure as established by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
