Title: Digitization and Copyright
Date: Friday, November 7, 2008
Presenter: Peter Hirtle, Intellectual Property Officer, Cornell University
Time: Sign-in, 9:00-9:30 a.m.; Class, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Location: Northern New York Library Network, Potsdam
Fee: $15.00 for library staff, $59.95 for all others (Lunch included),
"Blue Line" Library Staff: No Charge
Description: When selecting material for digitization, copyright law can be an area of great
uncertainty and risk. Even in the best of circumstances, the copyright status of some material, or the
legality of a repository making the material available on the Web, will be uncertain. The safest course
would be to severely limit the type of material made available via the Web, even though this approach might
be in opposition to a broader institutional mission. This class will explore what other strategies a
digitization program can follow to minimize the risks inherent when publishing material on the web. Topics
covered will include an introduction to basic copyright law and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act,
including "fair use" and "public domain" issues; methods for assessing the copyright status of materials;
and issues associated with particular formats. It will also discuss what options you have to protect your
own intellectual property. Throughout, the presentation will emphasize that digitization projects need to
work with their administrators to establish a mutually acceptable level of institutional risk.

Presenter: The Council of Community Services of New York State
Time: Sign-in, 9:00-9:30 a.m.; Class, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

more critical that librarians be enabled to take their case to those who make the decisions. In this
class, participants will learn about lobbying: how to talk to legislators, provosts, municipal leaders
and more. Participants will learn what to talk about and how to phrase the things they need to say.
This class is appropriate for administrators, librarians and library staff from all kinds of
