much more than a basic spreadsheet program, and this class can help students realize that potential.
For those using a previous version of Excel, the class can be very useful. The concepts remain the
same, but users of previous versions will see the screens will look different.

Description: It seems everyone is digitizing historic records and collections. But many people are
asking what to do with them then? Tom Blauvelt and Debra Kimok will lead our discussion on digital assets:
what are they, what to do with them, local projects and cooperative ventures, and why you shouldn’t fear
the digital wave of the future. Participants are asked to bring their questions regarding historical collections and the digital
frontier. The day will also include a tour of the Franklin County Historical & Museum Society.

Description: The discussion will focus on digitization best practices for cultural heritage
institutions. This presentation will address "What is digitization?" and "Why do we want to do it?" The topics
covered will include: understanding the process, scanning, selection of materials to digitize, sustainability
in an ever changing technological world, copyright, and metadata.
The day will also include a tour of the Adirondack History Center, and lunch will be provide.
Directions to the Adirondack History Center Museum, the corner of Hand Ave and Rt. 9/9N (Court Street) in
Elizabethtown. From the north: Travel south on I-87 to Exit 31. Turn right off exit toward Elizabethtown
(approx 4 miles). At blinking red light, take left up the hill and take first left onto Hand Avenue. From the
south: travel north on I-87 to Exit 30. Turn left off the exit and travel north on Rt.9 to Elizabethtown
(approx 13 miles). Continue past the school, stores, and county complex (approx ½ mile) and turn right on Hand

Topic: A Primer in DHP Grant Writing

Description: Many people wonder how they’ll ever manage to get through all the paperwork and
requirements to submit a DHP Grant. What the heck and how do you complete the: Category and Narrative Forms
and Budget Summary Form (FS-20); Payee ID Form; Schedule of Cost Sharing; Letters of Intent and nine copies of
what is signed in blue or black ink? The discussion will include an overview of the DHP Program along with a
grant writing primer, as well a description of the various projects that have received funding to preserve
records in Oswego County. The roundtable will end in a brainstorming session to prepare participants for
Archives Month 2009!
