**********
The library is unique in the small rural community of Martinsburg. It exists through the generosity and forethought of it's benefactor, William H. Bush, who was born and raised in Martinsburg. As a young man, William Bush left this small NY town and headed west to Chicago. With hard work and persistence he became a successful business man.
His biography, Empire Builder In the Texas Panhandle, written by Paul Carson, is an accurate and interesting account of Bush's personal character, family life, and the story of how he became a millionaire. His biography is at the library. By virtue of his love for reading and his memories of his "dear old Martinsburg", he gave liberally to the library while he way yet living and at his death in 1931, left a percentage of income from a trust to continue maintenance od the library. In 1980, the sum became sufficient to build an entirely new structure.
This endowment, along with the support of its patrons and the Martinsburg community offer a wealth of resources to be shared with the public.
